PROF. P.A. STEIN, LL.M studied law at Leiden University, where he was subsequently employed. He obtained his doctorate in law for his thesis entitled ‘Misuse of circumstances as basis for the invalidity of legal actions’. He worked as head of the legal department of the Coöperatieve Centrale Raiffeisen-Bank in Utrecht, and also as a lawyer. He then joined the Universiteit van Amsterdam, firstly as a principal research assistant and a short time later as professor of civil law, commercial law and civil procedural law. His inaugural lecture took the title ‘Forming and reforming private law’. Professor Stein has published books on subjects ranging from mortgage law and property transfer to security. He has written a handbook on the law of civil procedure, which is already in its eleventh edition and is co-author of Grondtrekken Handelsrechten, now in its eighth edition. In Dutch case law, Professor Stein has been responsible since 1979 for annotating rulings of the Supreme Court on employment contracts and landlord and tenant law. Professor Stein has been part of the Supervisory Board of Rabobank Nederland, is chairman of the Board of Appeal of the Royal Society of Bailiffs and member of the board of the Netherlands Arbitration Institute in Rotterdam.
B. VAN DER GOEN, LL.M (BOB), born in Amsterdam in 1940, studied law at the Universiteit van Amsterdam; took his doctoraal examination in Dutch Law in 1969, held a traineeship with a law firm in Amsterdam and Utrecht, company lawyer for Philips 1972-1973, since 1974 has been practising as a lawyer in Soest; legal adviser to the Dutch Breeders Association 1975-1980; legal adviser to the Dutch Association of Local Newspapers (NNP) 1974-1990: founder and first chairman of the Stichting Contactcentrum voor Advisers van het Bedrijfsleven; director of several Israeli/African companies (including oil companies, in particularly those operating in East Africa) 1984-1989; founder of and involved in the management of nine branches of law firms in the Netherlands and one in Zürich, Switzerland; publications on a range of subjects, including franchising, breeders’ rights and legal auditing; outside his specialist area he has published a novel and essays; speaker at various seminars on debt collection law; founder and first president of the International Association of Practising Lawyers with member lawyers from 34 countries; supervisory director of family firms; introduced a system of legal auditing (a legal check-up for companies) in the Netherlands; participates in organizations that market under licence the system of the legal practitioner by means of licence holders; organizes training courses and knowledge management on the subject; speaker at seminars and business events; member of the Board of Representatives of the Netherlands Bar Association.

VAN ZINNICQ BERGMANN (George), born in 1951, studied Dutch law at Utrecht University, graduating in Dutch private law with extra optional subjects in company and socio-economic law; traineeship in forest management in Germany 1975-76; doctoraal examination in 1984; lawyer practising in Soest since 1985, adviser/country estate manager.
M.B. BRUINSMA, LL.M (Mark), born in 1974, studied Dutch law at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, graduating in private law with extra optional subjects in company and international law; graduation thesis: ‘Civil liability of the police in specific dangerous traffic situations’; doctoraal examination in 1997, lawyer practising in Soest since 1999; with Van der Goen advocaten since 1997; active since 1988 in various committees within the Utrecht Volleyball Association and also as association referee and competition secretary, played at national level.
M.M. STRENGERS, LL.M (Monsé)
M.M. Strengers LL.M (Monsé) was born in 1971. She studied Dutch law at the University of Utrecht, specializing in private and criminal legal practice. Since 1995 she has worked in the legal services sector, qualifying as a lawyer in 1997 and specializing in the law of persons and family law. She is a member of the Dutch Association of Family Lawyers and Divorce Mediators (vFAS) and a registered NMI mediator. Since 1987 Mrs Strengers has been actively involved in a number of committees of various tennis associations, both as chairman and committee member, and is also a member of the supervisory committee of the Overberg location of the Heuvelrug youth custodial institution.
J.J. VAN DER GOEN, LL.M (Joël), born in Amsterdam in 1973, studied Dutch law at the Universiteit van Amsterdam, in the subjects of media and information law, copyright law and legal knowledge systems; graduation thesis: ‘Open Source Licensing’; doctoraal examination in 2003, has been with Van der Goen advocaten since 1999; co-founder and member of the board/shareholder of Emazing B.V. (web design and web-based software), Utrecht.
PROF. DR. B. SMALHOUT, born in Amsterdam. Studied medicine at the Municipal University of Amsterdam and during his studies worked as a journalist, advertising artist, illustrator, metalworker, teacher at a domestic science school, administrator for a music copyright bureau (BUMA), and finally as nurse on a psychiatric ward of the Valerius Clinic. Is married to the cellist Mieke van der Wees.
1956; MD degree
1956-1960: Military service, including service as a doctor at the Military Hospital in Utrecht. Specialized in anesthesiology, in various hospitals including Onze Lieve Vrowe Gasthuis in Amsterdam and Utrecht University Hospital.
1960: Appointed as head anesthetist at the neurosurgery clinic of Utrecht University Hospital and as second anesthetist at the Dr. A. Mathijsen Military Hospital in Utrecht.
1967: Obtained a Doctorate of Medicine, with the thesis ‘Capnography with neurosurgical patients’. Capnography is the measurement and registration of carbon dioxide in respiratory gases. The interpretation of the respiration curves obtained has now become a standard technique around the world in monitoring patients undergoing surgery.
1969: Appointed the first Professor of Anesthesiology at Utrecht University
1970: Founded the Institute for Anesthesiology at Utrecht University Hospital, designed and constructed the first intensive-care incubator in the world for keeping premature babies alive.
1972: Inaugural lecture entitled “De Dood op tafel” (Death on the table), giving an analysis of the causes of death or severe brain damage as a consequence of anesthesia errors. This lecture caused a major medical and media uproar, but ultimately led through questions in Parliament to the setting up of a Committee of the Health Council of the Netherlands. A few years later this Committee drew up minimum standards which anesthetic instruments and practice had to meet. In doing so, the Netherlands was some 15 years ahead of the rest of the world.
1991: Professor of the Year award, Ohio State University Hospital, Columbus, Ohio, USA
Numerous publications on a wide range of subjects, such as electronic patient monitoring, intensive care, bronchoscopy to manage bronchial problems and safety in anesthesia. More than 800 lectures on a range of subjects, varying from bronchial problems in children, euthanasia and hospital management to Bible history. These lectures have been given in more than 25 countries, including North and South America, Russia, Bulgaria, Poland, Brazil, China, Scandinavia, Egypt and Japan.
1992: Retired, under protest. Since then he has still been active in the medical world, in the area of bronchial problems particularly in young children. Guest professor in Germany and China. Published a theological work. Appointed professor at the Benelux University Centre in Antwerp and lecturer at various schools for higher nursing education. His book “Bijbelse Tijdgenoten’ (Bible Contemporaries) was for many weeks a top-ten bestseller.
1994: Received a Knighthood of the Order of the Netherlands Lion
2000: Compiled an interactive CD-ROM on 30 years of experience with bronchial problems.
Present activities:
Consultant anesthesiologist, particularly for bronchial disorders. Presenter of medical television films. Regular columnist for De Telegraaf newspaper and medical adviser. Also speaker on an extensive lecture circuit coordinated by an impresario.
